Written about two decades ago, the present article tries to distinguish the Constitution Revolution of Iran with other movements in the Middle East by laying stress on various aspects of popular participation, considering it among the most important revolutions of the world. In the first place the author describes Iran’s specific geographical location in comparison with other countries such as Egypt and the Ottoman Empire and then discusses the role of the ulema in the Iranian society. She particularly discusses the role of the ulema in opposing the ruling system which led to their leadership in the Constitutional Revolution.
