Guide to Using Artificial Intelligence and Language Models in Preparing Articles

Matin Research Journal

Why Did We Write This Guide?

Artificial intelligence and advanced language models have today become powerful tools in the fields of science and research. With their ability to process natural language, analyze data, and generate content, these technologies can make the process of writing scientific articles faster and better.

Matin Research Journal welcomes these technologies—but with one important condition: AI must complement the researcher's creativity and expertise, not replace it. The final responsibility for the accuracy and originality of an article always rests with the author.

This guide has been prepared to help you benefit from the advantages of AI without causing any harm to the originality and scientific quality of your article.

1. AI as a Research Assistant and Editing Tool

You can use AI models to improve the linguistic and writing quality of your article. These tools are useful in the following cases:

  • Editing and proofreading text
  • Improving clarity and fluency of writing
  • Organizing different sections of the article
  • Assisting in the early stages of writing and structuring content
  • Quickly searching for sources and concepts related to the research topic

2. Producing Data and Research Results: The Researcher's Exclusive Domain

The production of research data and the performance of original scientific analyses must be carried out entirely by the researchers themselves, using valid scientific methods. Therefore:

  • Using AI to generate hypothetical data, simulate data, or produce unverifiable results is unacceptable.
  • The extraction of results and final analyses must also be carried out only with valid research tools.
  • Drawing conclusions or interpreting research findings should not be done with AI.
  • If you have used AI to write an abstract, generate images or figures, or collect and analyze data, you must clearly and precisely explain in the Materials and Methods section how and with which tool this was done.

3. Transparency: A Non-Negotiable Principle

If you have used AI in preparing your article, please mention this in the "Acknowledgments" section or in a separate section titled "Use of AI Tools."

This transparency helps readers understand in which aspects AI contributed to the article, while maintaining the principles of scientific transparency. For example, you can explain that you used AI for language editing, writing correction, or structuring the article, and briefly introduce the sections that were improved.

It is also necessary to check the accuracy, validity, and appropriateness of the content and any citations created by AI, and to correct any errors or contradictions.

4. Searching for Scientific Sources with the Help of AI

Using AI to find valid scientific sources is permitted, provided that:

  • You carefully verify the originality and credibility of the selected sources.
  • You use only valid scientific sources and reliable databases.
  • You avoid citing sources that lack sufficient scientific credibility or that have been artificially generated.

In this way, AI will serve only as a tool to facilitate the search and collection of valid sources.

5. Scientific Independence and Research Originality

Researchers must carry out all main stages of the research independently and with their own specialized knowledge:

  • Designing the experiment
  • Collecting data
  • Analyzing findings
  • Drawing final conclusions

The use of AI should not be such that the researcher's primary role in knowledge production and scientific analysis is affected.

Note that currently available AI models are not completely objective or factual. If you use these tools to write your research, you must make every effort to ensure the accuracy of the outputs, and the sources provided must reflect the claims made.

6. Authors' Accountability

Authors are the primary responsible parties for the scientific content of the article and are obligated to ensure that all data and analyses presented are original and independent.

  • AI must not replace the researcher's main work in producing scientific data or research conclusions.
  • If AI is used for supportive aspects, transparency is required.
  • Authors are responsible for the content of their manuscript, even the parts generated by AI.
  • Consequently, they will be accountable for any violation of ethical principles in its publication.

Content Generated by Artificial Intelligence (AIGC)

AI content generation tools—such as ChatGPT and other large language model (LLM)-based tools—cannot be considered for initiating original research without the guidance of human authors.

Such content:

  • Cannot be held accountable for a published work.
  • Does not have legal standing or the ability to hold or transfer copyright.
  • According to the COPE position statement on AI tools, cannot play the role of an article author or be listed as an author.

If an author has used such tools to develop part of a manuscript, their use must be clearly and in detail explained in the Methods or Acknowledgments section. The author bears full responsibility for the accuracy of the information presented and the correct citations in their article.

Note: Tools used solely for improving spelling, grammar, and general editing are not covered by these guidelines. The final decision on the appropriateness or permissibility of using AIGC tools in the context of a submitted or published article rests with the journal's editor-in-chief.

Closing Remarks

This guideline has been prepared with the aim of supporting scientific principles and preserving the originality of articles in Matin Research Journal. As a scientific publication, we respect the positive and responsible applications of AI as a research assistant and recommend the use of these tools provided that scientific principles are strictly observed.

Authors are invited to follow these recommendations, and while taking advantage of new technologies, to focus on the originality and quality of their research so that articles of high scientific value, accuracy, and credibility may be published.
