Studying the Ways of Diffusion of Imam Khomeini’s Thoughts in Indonesia and Its Consequences

Abstract
This research is an attempt to study the impacts and the way of diffusion of Imam Khomeini’s thoughts in Indonesia, particularly among the Shia community, trying to answer the following questions: How did Imam Khomeini’s thoughts diffuse in Indonesia? What individuals and groups diffused Imam Khomeini’s thoughts in Indonesia? What were the consequences of the diffusion of Imam Khomeini’s thoughts in Indonesia and what reading of Islam was reinforced with these efforts? This qualitative research has applied documental method. The necessary data was collected from documents, books journals as well as interviews with excerpts and a number of intellectual and political activists in Indonesia. The findings of the paper indicate that Imam Khomeini’s thoughts diffused in Indonesia by both individuals (university professors and intellectuals) and institutions (official-political, cultural, religious, student NGOs, …). Its consequences include a change in the attitude of Indonesian people to Islam, universality of Islam, supporting of Palestinian cause, proximity of Islamic movements, formation the identity of Shia community in Indonesia based on constructive interaction with the government and following their activities within the Indonesian Constitution, and finally reinforcement of moderate Islam in this country.
